The weathervane has a rich history in the UK being one of the essential tools for forecasting the weather. They are seen on everything from cathedrals to garden sheds. They work because the aerodymanic centre of the vane is offset from the axis, even a light wind will turn the weathervane to point into the prevailing weather.

Today they are decorative features with many designs for the vane.
